Welcome to Bahrain Stamps

Saluki (Canis lupus familiaris)

Issued in the late 1970s as part of Bahrain's native animals and cultural heritage series, this stamp commemorates the Saluki, one of the oldest known dog breeds and a traditional hunting companion throughout the Arabian Peninsula. For centuries, Salukis were valued by Bedouin communities for their speed, endurance, and ability to assist in hunting across desert environments, making them an important part of the region's cultural and historical traditions. By featuring the Saluki, the State of Bahrain highlighted an animal closely associated with Arab heritage and traditional ways of life. The issue celebrated the enduring relationship between people and their hunting dogs while emphasizing the importance of preserving cultural traditions that form part of the historical identity of the Arabian Gulf.
